Challenges

NSK’s Newark plant is located in a seriously water-stressed region of the country. This was one of the key drivers for exploring Rainwater Harvesting for their site. If you would like to see whether you are located in a seriously water-stressed region, you can do so here.

NSK also wanted to reduce the amount of surface water runoff entering the combined sewers, helping to protect local lakes, rivers, and streams from sewer overflows. We helped them achieve these goals through Rainwater Harvesting.

With the project being a retrofit, we naturally faced some challenges regarding spatial constraints. However, our specialist team were able to overcome these and found a perfect location for the Rainwater Harvesting system, nestled right next to the site’s beautiful garden.

Solution

The bespoke Water Reuse system selected by our expert estimators came in the form of our 10,000-litre StormStation, which is particularly suitable for retrofit sites thanks to its “plug and play” nature. NSK also requested a custom paint and branding job for their system, which led to us producing our first red StormStation.

This system collects water from 25% of the site's 4,950 m² roof area to provide a reliable non-potable water supply for flushing toilets used by 120 people daily.

NSK also opted to include our UV disinfection system within the StormStation to eliminate the risk of legionella developing. After installation, they chose to retrofit our cotton filter as a third stage of filtration. This prevents shadowing in the UV disinfection unit, giving them maximum protection against legionella.

Outcome

This solution has allowed Stormsaver to provide a non-potable water supply to the manufacturing facility’s 16 toilets.

Stormsaver has provided biannual maintenance and biennial tank cleaning services for the system since its installation three years ago, enabling it to operate at maximum efficiency and saving NSK over 1.3 million litres of water.

Having developed such a good working relationship over the past three years, Stormsaver was able to visit the site to talk to NSK about their experience with the system. The video of this can be seen below.
